For the last three years the famous cycling club, Nelson Wheelers from Lancashire, have staged a weekend of time trials here in Cumbria attracting over seventy riders on each day. The ten mile event at Braithwaite held on a windy but bright day was notable in that a rider from Preston Wheelers, Jimmy Wright, was last man off and he not only won the race but also smashed the course record with a new time of 19 minutes 56 seconds. West Cumbria riders did well with three in the top ten. Peter Brear, VCC, finished second in 21.21 fresh after his training in Lanzarote, Rob Hargreaves, Team Swift and VCC, was fifth in 21.58 and Mark Amor, VCC, made seventh place in 22.07. Ken Hargreaves, Team Swift and VCC, was fastest of the O/65's in 24.28. The sunday morning 25 mile event was held in colder and much windier conditions with the winner clocking an excellent time for the conditions. Mark Halton, Team Shorter Rochford, took the top honours in a time of 51 minutes 57 seconds. In second place was Cleveleys rider Derek Parkinson with 53.10 seconds and Peter Brear finished third in 55.51. Only a few seconds separated the next 6 riders all on 57 minutes with Rob Hargreaves ninth in 57.31. David Robinson finished in 59.45. 05-05-2009 - 14th Lane Quest Series

Mark can be contacted on Tuesdays at the club events, by or on 01946 690950. Many thanks. 04-05-2009 - Cycle Festival in Kendal - May 30th - June 7th 2009 -

22-04-2009 - Ged leading Ken by only 2 seconds in club 10 mile Vets Championship
It looks as if it's going to be a close run thing in both the Vets and Senior
club 10 mile Championships this season. Ged Brear's recent 10 mile time has given him a two second lead in the Vets championship over Ken Hargreaves and the top four in the senior championship are separated by only 13 seconds. Brian Payton currently leads with a time of 22:03. Wendy Thomas leads the Ladies 10 mile Championship with Sue Latham in second. It all could change next week however as the championships move to the faster Keswick course.
Don't forget there is another club competition for the 10 mile distance. The Kitto Trophy is awarded to the rider who clocks the fastest time for a 10 mile TT on any course. In order for me to keep you posted on the leaders in this competition please can you send your results for any 10 mile TTs that you do other than the club 10s. 11-04-2009 - Early season leaders in club 10 mile Championships
Wendy Thomas and Brian Payton are heading the Ladies and Senior club 10 mile TT Championships respectively. Ken Hargreaves is leading the Veterans on Standard competion over the same distance with a very impressive +6:35. He's going take some beating! The top five in each of these competitions can be found by following the Current Leaders link. I'll be updating these as the season progresses and I'll also be adding leader boards for each of the many other VC Cumbria competitions - some of which you may not have known existed.
11-04-2009 - Derwent Valley CC Sunday rides
Derwent Valley CC will be launching Sunday rides as from 19th of April. Start at Brigham Church 9.00am and finish 1.00pm Brigham or Cockermouth. These will be social rides of approximately 50 miles and include a cafe stop. More information will be going on their website soon.
03-04-2009 - Membership renewal
A gentle reminder to VC Cumbria riders to ensure that they renew their VC Cumbria membership if they wish to continue participating in the VC Cumbria club events. Unfortunately, non paid up members can compromise the insurance of our events for everyone. Tim will be at the Embleton event on Sunday and will gratefully receive membership applications 'on the line'. Many thanks for your cooperation in this matter and good luck for the coming season.
11-03-2009 - Club event marshals for this season
Please can club members check on their marshaling duties at club events for this season. It is essential for the safety of each event that marshals turn out. If for any reason you cannot perform your marshaling duties then please make arrangements for someone to cover you and if possible let me know so that I can update the website.
22-02-2009 - DVCC Peter Taylor Memorial Ride
The second Peter Taylor Memorial Ride, organised by DVCC, will take place on Sunday 29th March 2009. Leaving Eaglesfield Village Hall at 10am.
18-02-2009 - New experimental divisional league structure
In addition to the current VC Cumbria league that will continue unchanged from previous seasons, we are promoting a new experimental divisional league structure this season. By grouping riders according to their 10M TT times we have formed four divisions so that riders can "fight it out" with riders of similar speed. We hope you enjoy the extra edge of racing against your peers and if you have any views on the experiment then please let us know.
17-02-2009 - Many thanks for Prize Presentation
Many thanks to all the organisers, helpers and those attending who all contributed to making the Prize Presentation a great success. Congratulations to all prize winners.

04-01-2009 Tim enters the 21st century but needs help!
Anyone out there got any Shimano 9 (or even ancient 7) speed STI kit (brake/gear levers, maybe front and rear changers if they suit triples!) they would like to sell? Having got 'sold' on STI this year with my road bike, I'd like to convert my tourer from it's 7-speed downtube stuff.

Everyone welcome.
12-10-2008 VC Cumbria riders beat the professionals in France
Two of our club members recently made the long journey to northern France to compete in the “Duo Normand” team time trial. Whitehaven born Peter Brear (39) now based in Carlisle, and Mark Amor (33) of Whitehaven continued Britain's recent dominance of cycling by winning the open unlicenced category by almost three minutes. One hundred and twenty five two-man teams rolled down the starting ramp in this category in true Tour De France style, complete with following cars on closed roads in what is the blue riband event for amateur time trialists.
The 54.3km course leaves Marigny village and travels out through the farmlands of Normandy, before the hillier second half of the course returns the riders back to the village, past the spectators grandstand, onto the finishing 10km loop. The two VC Cumbria riders made good progress on the flatter first half of the course, going through 40km (25 miles) in 52 minutes. Peter, belying his near veteran status leading the way as the Cumbrians passed fifteen other teams. As the gradient increased in the second half of the race, Mark, the younger and lighter rider began doing the lions share of the work to bring the team home to victory at an average speed of 42km/hr. The VC Cumbria team finished in a creditable time of 1:18:25 to win by 2 minutes 44 seconds from teams from France, Holland, Belgium, Germany and Iran. The riders claimed the scalps of three elite teams and shared the winners podium with several professional teams including Tour De France riders and national squads. To demonstrate the calibre of riders who normally compete in this race, the elite category was won last year by multi-olympic gold medallist Bradley Wiggins. Three hundred and fifty two-man teams took part including professionals, veterans and disabled riders. 12-10-2008 Mallorca Spring Training 09
A few of us are going to Arenal (near Palma) for our annual early season training week of 14/02/09 - 21/02/09. We will be staying at Hotel SanDiego and can obtain a substantial discount. Last year's price was 19 euros per night, per person, half board (based on two sharing a twin room) and it is envisaged that the price will remain very similar. The hotel is modest, but comfortable, and is used to catering for cyclists. Bikes are housed in rooms in a locked cellar.
Arenal is ideally situated for riding as varied terrain is easily accessible. There are direct flights to Palma from Newcastle and Liverpool, and the transfer to the hotel is about 20 euros per taxi. Bikes can be hired from a well equipped shop just 100 metres from the hotel. If interested, contact Keith Ashbridge, or Neil Hercberg or e-mail and I can put you in touch. We could do with knowing numbers by the end of the month. (October) 19-09-2008 Derwent Valley Hill Climb
Derwent Valley CC are organising a hill climb on 28-09-2008 at The Pheasant Inn, Wythop. It starts at 11am and is 1km in length.
All welcome. 19-09-2008 Best wishes and congratulations
Best wishes to Richard Houghton in the final promotion of the Chris Boardman Championships. He is currently in 5th position in this National competition and hopes for a high placed finish in this event. Richard is an excellent climber and so this last event being a hill climb should favour him over his rivals.
Congratulations to 12 year old VCCumbria rider Alex Hargreaves who won a grass track race at Ambleside sports. Don't look back Ken!
19-09-2008 Good times in the Cumberland Challenge

10-09-2008 Lakeland Sprinters Press Release
Velo Club Cumbria was officially recognised as one of the top cycling clubs in Britain when the West Cumbrian based organisation was awarded the coveted Clubmark Accreditation by Sport England and British Cycling at the Cumbria Kart Racing Club circuit at Rowrah on Wednesday.
Dropping in to congratulate the Lakeland Sprinters and hard working and dedicated officials of VC Cumbria was the newly crowned British Cycling 800 metres grass track sprint champion Neil Withington of Anderson Racing. At the forefront of the VC Cumbria achievement is the youth development programme which began nearly twenty years ago. And, with the invaluable assistance of the Cumbria Kart Racing Club who allow the use of the Rowrah circuit, the programme has enable several hundreds of young cyclists to take part in a structured programme of cycling activities in a safe environment during this time. Credit is also due to the British Cycling initiative which saw the need for a structured programme aimed at introducing young people in to cycling. Starting from the surprising statistic that more youngsters ride bicycles daily than partake in any other sport, British Cycling encouraged local cycling clubs to take up the Challenge. Velo Club Cumbria was amongst the first to do so and has successfully guided promising riders through to the British Cycling talent team programme which provides the structure for development to the World Class and Olympic Performance Plans. Representatives of British Cycling, Alex Scoular who is Northwest Development Officer and Rob Mace Clubmark Leader, pointed out that VC Cumbria was among the first from a total of 1600 clubs in Britiain to have achieved the high honour of the Sport England Clubmark accreditation through the Go-Ride scheme. Lakeland Sprinters joined Neil in a celebratory lap of the Rowrah circuit before the Carlisle based rider presented the riders with Achievement Awards for the 2008 season which ended on Wednesday.
10-09-2008 Proposed VC Cumbria club events for season 2009
A list of proposed club events for next season is available.
Please take a moment to review what is proposed and feedback any thoughts/issues to myself or bring them to the AGM. If you wish to swap around marshaling duties, that's fine, but please try to work it out between yourselves initially and let me know the changes so that I can update the list. Any problems that you can't resolve, let me know also so that we don't have to cancel races due to absent marshals.

20-04-2008 BRITISH CYCLING ANNOUNCES: NEW COACHING QUALIFICATIONS
BRITISH CYCLING ANNOUNCES: NEW COACHING QUALIFICATIONS – WITH EXCLUSIVE FUNDING FOR GO-RIDE CLUBS
British Cycling is revealing the details of its new Level 3 coaching qualifications to Go-Ride clubs ahead of a national launch – with special assistance for Go-Ride clubs to enter coaches for the new qualifications. The new Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Track Cycling and Level 3 Certificate in Coaching Road and Time Trial are the latest stage in the expansion of the British Cycling Coach Education Programme. They are the first of six discipline-specific qualifications to be launched at Level 3, with BMX and Mountain Bike scheduled for launch in 2009, followed by Cyclo-Cross and Cycle Speedway in 2010. Led by British Cycling’s Coaching and Education team the two new world-leading qualifications have had a significant contribution from technical experts throughout the world of cycling, including British Cycling’s own Olympic coaches. The result is that materials for both Level 3 qualifications capture a level of coaching information never documented before. The Level 3 qualifications are aimed at coaches who have experience of track or road and time trial coaching and who have completed the prerequisite British Cycling Level 2 Discipline-specific Coaching Award. Further details can be found here and anybody interested should contact

Some of the fastest racing cyclists from Cumbria, the North East, Lancashire and Yorkshire took part in Velo Club Cumbria's 25 mile time trial on Sunday. Although the winner was Derek Parkinson of the Cleveleys Road Club, in a time of 53:28, local West Cumbrian riders were outstanding on their local A66 course. In second place was Brian Payton, VC Cumbria from Eaglesfield, who came in with 55:33 and Mark Amor, VC Cumbria from Whitehaven was 5th in 56:26. His brother-in-law Peter Brear, VC Cumbria from Carlisle, clocked 56:36 in 7th place to complete the VC Cumbria team finishers and ensure the team award went to the local club. Rob Hargreaves, Team Swift from Brigham, was 8th in 56:52. 03-04-2008 Correction
Although Ken was the first veteran overall in the Border City Wheelers' promotion reported in the last news item, he did not actually win the Joe Christie Trophy. The trophy is a North Group VTTA trophy and only members of that group can win it. Ken is a member of the North Lancs VTTA group. Apologies to all concerned and congratulations to Lee Foster of Border City Wheelers who actually won the trophy.
Further apologies for missing out Ged Brear in the previous news item as one of VC Cumbria's finishers at the same event in a time of 57:52.
31-03-2008 Ken wins Joe Christie Trophy
The Border City Wheelers' event last Sunday covered two races. One for the Lakes and Lancs sporting course competition and the other race for veterans in the VTTA North group, competing for the Joe Christie Trophy.
The course distance of 25 miles was shortened by 1.5 miles from the turn due to roadworks. However, with the weather windy, wet and cold, plus the early start due to the clock change, none of the 62 riders complained. Winner of the veterans event and the Joe Christie Trophy was Eaglesfield's Ken Hargreaves, Team Swift in a time of 55:07 (with a puncture!). Second was Lee Foster and third was Mike Westmorland, both from the promoting club. In the senior race, West Cumbrian riders all finished in the top 20. The outright winner was North East rider Keith Murray, Scott Cycles, in 47 minutes and 43 seconds. Carlisle based, Velo Club Cumbria's Peter Brear finished 2nd only 14 secs behind in 47:57. Brian Payton, VCC, from Eaglesfield was 4th in 48:20 and Mark Amor, VCC, from Whitehaven finished in 7th place wih a time of 49:32. Geoff Ayers, VCC, another Eaglesfield rider finished in 14th place in 52:55 and Dave Robinson, VCC, from Whitehaven clocked 53:14 for 17th place.

27-03-2008 Message from our chairman - Presentation lunch update - please book up now and support this event!
As of Wednesday 26th March 2008, only 8 places have been booked for the Club Presentation Lunch at the Hundith Hill Hotel on Sunday 6th April 2008. If substantially more places are not booked by Saturday 29th March 2008, the event will have to be cancelled.
No doubt this will come as a disappointment to the 2007 champions, who are:
Julian Cook( Mark Wells( Brian Payton( Richard Houghton( Peter Brear( Sam Ayres( Mark Amor( David Hayton( Adam Powe and Ged Brear.......
So, if you've been putting it off to see if you can get a lastminute reduction, you can't and £10.50 is a fair price for good 3-course lunch.
Also, if you are a prize winner and can't make it, please let either Julian or me (David) know so we don't have to cart excess silverware around the county, which is difficult with your arm in a sling (Julian's not mine).
