Lakeland Sprinters Junior Cycling - Race reports
Report for Wed 27th May 2009

[Numbers low; quality high!]

The combined attractions of half-term holidays and Manchester United vs Barcelona on the box meant that only a small but select field of 16 riders took to the track at Rowrah Kart Stadium last Wednesday for the third Lakeland Sprinters event of the year. Still, but cool, conditions made for excellent racing and 11 of the 16 riders achieved new personal best times.

Sam Johnston, at his first attempt at the 500m time trial, led the Division 4 riders with his time of 2:00 exactly. 2nd fastest rider was Joshua Hewitt (2:19, new pb), followed by Molly Rankin (2:53, new pb), Jessica Edgar (3:45, new pb) and Poppy Rankin (5:28, new pb).

Division 3 (500m time trial): Lucy Hewitt (1:52, just 2 seconds off her pb), Alex Bewley (1:57, new pb), Jonny Hargreaves (2:02 - a brave attempt following his crash earlier in the evening) and Olivia Fearon (2:20, taking 26 seconds off her time the previous week).

In Division 2 (1km time trial) the only rider on the night was Matthew Last. Matthew rode his new racing machine round the 2 laps of the 500m track in a new pb of 2:30, taking 22 seconds off his previous fastest time. It may not be about the bike, but it can help!

Division 1 (1 km time trial): Daniel Baron (2:15, only 2 seconds slower than his pb), David Houghton, making a return to the circuit after a long lay-off (2:16, new pb), Patrick Cowman (2:21, new pb), George Bennett (2:30, new pb), Kristian Cook (2:32, new pb) and Stephen Gascoigne (2:35, new pb).

Division 1 - team time trial - winning team Daniel Baron, Kristian Cook and George Bennett (1.5km in 3:30). Runners up - David Houghton, Stephen Gascoigne and Patrick Cowman (3:36).

The evening's final event was the Hare and Hounds race. Hares Stephen Gascoigne, Kristian Cook and George Bennett were set off half a lap ahead of Hounds Daniel Baron, Patrick Cowman and David Houghton. By working together as a team, the Hares seek to break clear from the Hounds, and similarly the objective for the Hounds is to work as a team to catch the Hares. Carefully calculating the rate at which the gap between the hares and the hounds was closing, coach Penny Kingsland blew her whistle for the final lap. From this point every rider races as an individual, rather than working together as a team. This was so well judged that all the riders crossed the finish line with 4 seconds of each other. Finishing positions were: 1st Daniel Baron, 2nd George Bennett, 3rd David Houghton, 4th Patrick Cowman, 5th Kristian Cook and 6th Stephen Gascoigne.

Lakeland Sprinters runs every Wednesday night from 6th May right throughout the summer to 2nd Sept at Rowrah Karting Stadium. New riders and Divisions 2, 3 and 4 start at 1800 hrs. Division 1 riders start at 1900 hrs.
